OpenAI has debuted an AI search update for ChatGPT. Three months following the company’s first public release of a SearchGPT prototype, OpenAI’s future AI search vision is now accessible to the public.

Adam Fry, ChatGPT’s product lead for search, refers to the tool as “ChatGPT search” rather than “SearchGPT.” It enters an increasingly crowded and contentious sector of AI search alternatives for users, with competition from smaller firms like Perplexity and big heavyweights like Google with its AI Overview search results. So far in 2024, journalists have criticized Google and Perplexity’s AI search for illegally reproduced components of original work and erroneous information hallucinations.

The new search experience is only accessible if you have the ChatGPT Plus plan for $20 monthly or ChatGPT Teams through business. OpenAI will present this to users with Enterprise and Edu programs later in November. Free users will likely wait the longest—probably until early next year.
The latest generative model of OpenAI customized version of GPT-4o drives ChatGPT search. Users can access it via the ChatGPT website, Android and Apple mobile app, and Mac and Windows online app. The AI search function will probably be available in any nation where ChatGPT is accessible.
Fry advises consumers to ask multipronged queries and lean toward the instrument’s natural language capabilities. “This isn’t your normal search engine, where you just do keywords and have to game what you’re asking,” he explains.
